Fighting Ghosts in a Finished War
Sin is a poltergeist. The atrocities and tragedies of this world are merely antagonistic spectres, for they have all been vanquished.
It is strange to be fighting battles that have long been won. I’m warring against an enemy whose time is very limited, subject to the consequences of evil, and enduring the obliteration of my body and soul, all while knowing that it is finished. It has been brought to a triumphant close by a mighty Victor.
Yet, here I am- broken, lonely, aching in spirit and in flesh but wholly and viscerally redeemed, claimed, loved, saved, sanctified and free.
Holding both truths remains both a plight and a privilege, tending to a body and soul that has been compromised while making sure to hold His victory in higher regard than my earthly woes.
I think our human minds can’t hold the full breadth of this redemption- how opulent our inheritance, how complete our subsistence. Our current reality is what we know best but it holds far less truth, in regards to actuality. Yes, this here is actual, but not nearly as actual as what has been accomplished, what has been won, and what is coming for those who put their faith in Christ Jesus.
Compared to the mansions and the gold streets and the Mercy Seat, this is a fever dream; one where we run too slowly, where things don’t work like they should, and sin cloaks itself in the darkness of corners.
Fighting ghosts seems to make no good sense. Ah, but- there are souls to be saved and faith to be cultivated. There is truth to be realized and a vicissitude that is only born from pain and struggle.
So we endure, we wait, we war against the ghouls while reminding ourselves that, for us, they aren’t as real as they seem.
We don’t give up because He never did and never will. We keep with the battle, as we have been called but take the peace of certain victory along.
