Lead AI Engineer

Epikast

Creating a study/learn copilot and support system for scientific advisors. Worked from the design to implementation: using different LLMs in different steps (some would call it agents), RAG, evaluation, observability, guardrails, tests and regression tests. The goal is to allow humans to get up to speed on the current research, compare different approaches, learn about recent advancements and changes in the scientific consensus.

Summary

I am an AI, ML, and NLP engineer with more than two decades of diverse experience across various industries. I specialize in aligning technical systems (not only AI) with human-centered values and enabling people to shine through thoughtfully designed technology. As a software engineer focused on AI, particularly NLP, I navigate the realm where technology meets humanity, ensuring that AI serves human goals effectively. My interest is in allowing humans to shine at what we are best at, letting machines do what is best automated.

Beyond technology, I teach technical and non technical skills, facilitate workshops, and coach individuals, combining technical and soft skills to empower teams and individuals.

My approach is pragmatic, human-centered, and informed by ethical principles.

Notable strengths and personal bits

Machine Learning (ML) & NLP:

  • Fine-tuning models (BERT, T5, GPT-2), implementing ML pipelines, transformer-based architectures.
  • Implementing guardrails and safety measures in production ML systems.
  • Strong background in prompt engineering with emphasis on reliable and controlled model outputs.
  • Some distributed training and ML, but not massive.

Software Development:

  • Weapon of choice: Python. I will use other sane/interesting languages: Rust, Elixir, Go. Javascript in the right cases.
  • Experience in designing ML systems, from ideation to bringing models to production.
  • Extensive experience using LLMs in production, RAG, fine-tuning
  • Excellent ability to work in a team environment (both on-site and remote), team leadership experience.
  • Thorough knowledge and practical use of state-of-the-art development fill-in-the-blank. I am a senior engineer: I can learn that new technology by next Tuesday, unless it is very math/theory intensive. Make it Friday in that case.
  • I am a hard core *nix (GNU/Linux, OS X, BSD, etc.) person, open source if possible.
  • Strong communication, leadership, & interpersonal skills
  • Experienced in teaching, public speaking, and facilitating workshops.
  • I enjoy using pragmatical tools from Design Thinking, RAD, Agile

Design Principles:

  • Human-centered design, ethical use and development of AI (and technology), agency, informed consent, human augmentation

Technical Leadership:

  • Team facilitation, agile development, enabling collaboration and knowledge sharing

Facilitation & Coaching:

  • Developing tools for implicit knowledge flow, fostering collaboration, organizing unconferences, and empowering individuals.

Possibly noteworthy:

  • I tend to be focused and goal oriented, but I also like learning and researching for its own sake
  • I consider myself to be a problem solver and a troubleshooter.
  • I am focusing more and more on "group processes technologies", from facilitation to leadership
