HELABA

  • HELABA started developing its credit risk management in the early 2000s as a client-server application with a SQL Server back end and an MS Access front end. Over 15 years it grew into a software giant with more than a million lines of code. German joined the BI team to maintain the existing system and build a new, modern front end. After modeling the application and adding a debug code trail, he could quickly analyze and resolve open issues and extend back-end functionality and the various front ends (MS Access, Excel, Word, each half a million lines of code in complex object-oriented design patterns).
  • He quickly became known as an all-round troubleshooter for MS Office and VBA issues. In the meantime, he co-developed the new C#.NET front end for the credit risk management application, including peripheral tooling in VB.NET. He built many other databases and full applications, for example an HR reporting database based on SAP data. He wrote Python and R scripts for detailed statistical analysis of operational risk data.
  • He currently develops new requirements for the credit risk and operational risk application systems.
  • Department: HELABA / BI Team, Developer.

  • For the new "Capacity Management" program, the team was reorganized, and extra hands were needed to reach its goals, so German joined.
  • He implemented several agile stories, such as adding geographic imagery to rail objects (networks, divisions, regions, track sections, operation points) and building a data mart with many new source system interfaces. Most recently, he refactored and optimized the GDF-Z interface in pair programming.
  • Department: Capacity Management Program / NeMo Team, Developer.

Business Information Analyst

AEGON

  • Aegon launched an improvement project in early 2016. German joined in September. After mapping the current situation and training the team in agile methods, he led a separate analysis phase to identify all business and data requirements. About 4,000 data fields and 10,000 lines of SQL code were documented and analyzed (technical and business). Meanwhile he designed a relational data model, which due to data quality issues was soon replaced by a Data Vault model. The SQL Server 2008 R2 instance was replaced by a new Azure SQL DB (OTAP) with a four-layer DWH solution (Landing Zone, Control Tables, Data Vault, Data Marts) and an SSRS/Power BI front end. He built an Azure Functions front end usable on iPads. German designed and built the DWH structure, all SQL statements, stored procedures, SSIS packages, and SSRS reports. He wrote Python and R scripts for detailed statistical analysis of source data.
  • He also served as Scrum Master, mentored an intern (PDF scraping with PowerShell), and led a four-member technical team.

ABNAMRO

  • After German completed the situation analysis, he wrote a project proposal with two options: 1) develop an MS Access application; 2) implement EPM. ABN AMRO chose the second. German led project kickoff, secured approvals from the IT architecture committee, IT security, procurement, and internal audit. He authored the project charter, PID, and detailed plans, and led a team of three. Later he focused on technical solutions and took on the lead architect role. He organized EPM hosting and vendor management with Microsoft, Perrit, freelancers, and CGI. German managed requirements on behalf of the model management chain’s four departments. He configured MS Project, Project Server, SharePoint, SQL Server, SSRS, and SharePoint Server. He handled stakeholder management with departments, internal audit, the Dutch central bank, and other parties. German was the solution visionary, handled design details, and aligned use cases with users. He proposed integrated datasets, solved data quality issues, and organized data ownership. He ran DTS tool management and trained functional managers. Organizationally, he designed new chain processes around the new tool in ARIS and implemented them. He built 100+ management reports and a custom data warehouse with a SQL Server sync mechanism.
  • He also developed custom MS Project functions for usability and trained users and admins. The initial improvement areas from internal audit and the Dutch central bank were solved with the Microsoft EPM solution across the entire model management chain. All 160 concurrent modeling projects were implemented, including static and dynamic data for all financial models. German made extensive EPM customizations with SharePoint sites, MS Project functions, and 100+ custom reports, and organized functional and technical management. Many EPM issues were resolved with the hosting partner and Microsoft MVPs in Portugal. Finally, German produced 30 training videos for end users and admins.

  • Internal audit and the Dutch central bank reported on the model management chain results. The status of management actions was unclear. A manager who had worked with German before asked him to analyze the situation. German reviewed audit findings, current status, and drafted concrete management actions, aligning them with leadership. He reported to ABN AMRO’s board and the Dutch central bank. He was then asked to run QA management for the four model management departments. He developed KPIs and a “Chain QA Tool” in MS Access/VBA. He reported KPIs biweekly, then monthly. After one department head left, German analyzed the Access tooling and wrote a project proposal for a final QA solution (MS Enterprise Project Management). His proposal was accepted, and he began implementing EPM.
