To carry out development projects efficiently, our client, a commercial vehicle manufacturer, is implementing an organizational transformation process. Based on the scaled agile framework (SAFe®), the role of a Release Train Engineer (RTE) is to be filled. Within the FOTA (Feature Over The Air) project, various development teams are combined into a VCT (Value Creation Train). The FOTA VCT is organized by a so-called triad. The “triad” consists of a Product Manager (PM), a System Architect (Sys. Arch.) and an RTE (Release Train Engineer).
The RTE is mainly responsible for running the ART events and processes (in the sense of SAFe®) and for supporting the teams in delivering results; the RTE acts as a servant leader and coaches leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in the new processes and mindsets; the RTE helps adapt SAFe® to the organization’s needs, standardizes and documents practices.
- Conduct backlog refinement meetings to clarify the work packages needed to implement so-called "capabilities"
- Prepare status sync / VCT meetings and run them together with the PM and the system architect. These meetings serve to align topics weekly between the PO teams, PM, and system architects
- Guide Scrum Masters of the PO teams and hold regular alignment meetings with the Scrum Masters, among other things to react to team impediments in good time and resolve them
- Support system architects in running regular architecture / concept meetings so that all PO team members and relevant stakeholders are informed about important architecture topics / concepts
- Responsible for planning, moderating, and running PI plannings
- Prepare RTE retros, reviews, and demos as part of the SAFe® events and conduct them with stakeholders
- Responsible for maintaining Jira ticket content and providing information on Confluence
- Create an overview / plan of time-dependent work packages / capabilities (e.g., Gantt chart).
